Our industry has recently been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons with professional bodies hearing allegations of serious medical malpractice and decisions made to mitigate costs impacting on the patients outcome.
You may not be aware there is absolutely no regulation of any kind beyond the professional bodies of the various levels of medical staff.
There still exists the MDF, no not a cheap wood substitute but the Medical Directors Forum which is a collection of some of the Dr's employed by the various players in the field. This body is almost dead on arrival and more an exercise in providing ageing Dr's a talking shop than actually innovating and providing guidance.
It seems extraordinary that any one can buy a website and offer themselves up as a company handling desperately serious life and death situations, making decisions that can make a difference between life and death. Yes it is that serious and profound.
We should now as an industry start a conversation about how we self regulate and form a professional body before government gets involved and does it for us. And let's please avoid those individuals who have for years appeared in so many different roles in so many companies and claim expertise when in fact they have had their day and have nothing left to offer.
